Short presentation:

Art Media Events Studio Association invites female visual artists, whose practice includes multidisciplinary approaches, to submit proposals for artworks/art interventions for the group exhibition within the project “Lockout Stereotypes”, carried out in cooperation with 4Culture Association (Bucharest) and Fiksdal Dans Foundation (Oslo).

The topics covered in the programme are: discrimination against Roma people/communities in Romania – including regarding employment opportunities, discrimination and marginalization of Roma women, stereotypes and prejudice against Roma girls and women in Romania.

Eligibility:

Participation is open to all female artists resident in Romania or Norway, regardless of age, sex or nationality, working in any contemporary artistic medium. The exhibition will be presented in Ploiesti and Bucharest in spring 2023, with a digital version adapted to the educational environment of the partner schools in Ploiesti.

  • availability between March and May 2023 for participation in a series of guided tours of the exhibition and a thematic debate
  • for foreign artists it is important that they are fluent in English
  • applications are strongly encouraged from artists from minority backgrounds, with or without professional experience, but with an interest in contemporary art

Applications:

To participate in the selection process, applicants must provide the following documents:

  • CV (in Romanian or English);
  • a short presentation of the artistic concept they propose to develop within the project, including technical details (if applicable);
  • full portfolio / other material relevant to the application (A4 format, PDF, no more than 10 Mb; video work or documentation in AVI, WMV or QuickTime format up to 500 mb in total). Please provide a download link using free transfer services such as Dropbox.com or Wetransfer.com.

Forms of support:

  • A fee will be provided for artists selected in the exhibition.
  • The organizers reserve the right to make changes to event dates.

More about the project:

The project “Lockout Stereotypes” addresses the problems of discrimination against Roma girls and women, who are discriminated against on both ethnic and gender grounds. It includes innovative curatorial and production practices, proposes cultural education activities, research and artistic production with a role of empowerment, raising public awareness, confidence and self-esteem, as well as new cultural products (illustrated book, creative design objects), thus promoting the diversity and traditions of Roma culture among the community and a wider public in Romania and Norway.

The exhibition will be presented in Ploiesti and Bucharest in spring 2023, with a digital version adapted to the educational environment of  the partner schools in Ploiesti, with explanatory audio-video introductions.
